Yoga in the Iyengar Tradition
Alignment, Strength, Awareness
Yoga is an ancient philosophical system originating in ancient India, offering a holistic path to physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, and ultimately
awakening. The word Yoga means both “union” and “integration,” as well as the discipline of aligning the body with the soul to cultivate presence and awareness.
Hatha Yoga is the branch of Yoga that balances body and mind with particular emphasis on physical postures (Asanas) and breath control (Pranayama). I teach Hatha Yoga in the tradition of
Sri B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014), one of the most influential modern yoga masters. His approach has become one of the most widely practiced styles of Yoga worldwide, known for its precision, therapeutic applications, and accessibility to practitioners of all levels and capabilities.
The Iyengar method emphasizes, among other things:
- Precise Alignment & Technique – Developing strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance through refined posture.
- Use of Props – Blocks, belts, bolsters, and chairs support practitioners in deepening their practice, making difficult poses more accessible, and refining seemingly simple poses.
- Therapeutic Application – Adaptable for people with injuries, limitations, pregnancy, illness or other specific needs.
- Structured Sequencing – Arranging poses strategically to optimize their effect on the body and mind.
This combination leads to deep integration between body, breath, and mind, taking practitioners beyond movement into a state of meditation in motion. Advanced students experience Asana and Pranayama as profound meditative practices, cultivating presence and vitality in the present moment.
